Product Description

This version of Rogue’s 28MM Training Bar features a stainless steel shaft and our new Proprietary Matte Black sleeve finish.  Many athletes favor stainless steel as a way to get the “natural” feel of the knurl–similar to a bare steel bar but with better corrosion resistance. The PM Black finish also greatly improves the long-term corrosion resistance and color endurance of the Training Bar’s sleeves, as it effectively transforms the surface of the steel rather than coating it.

Rogue 28MM Training Bar - Stainless / Proprietary matte Black

This version of Rogue’s 28MM Training Bar features a stainless steel shaft and our new Proprietary Matte Black sleeve finish.  Many athletes favor stainless steel as a way to get the “natural” feel of the knurl–similar to a bare steel bar but with better corrosion resistance. The PM Black finish also greatly improves the long-term corrosion resistance and color endurance of the Training Bar’s sleeves, as it effectively transforms the surface of the steel rather than coating it.

Each of these 20KG barbells is fully machined and assembled at the Rogue factory in Columbus, Ohio, utilizing the uniform knurl pattern of our Olympic WL Bar and the bronze bushings of the Rogue Ohio Bar. The result is a more cost-efficient, intermediate bar for athletes who still want the look and feel of a competition-ready Olympic barbell.

The quality U.S. steel used in the Stainless 28MM Training Bar meets a minimum tensile strength of 200,000 PSI, and each shaft is individually tested for straightness to within 0.015” (0.38MM). Single Olympic knurl marks are included (no center knurl).

Note on Stainless Steel: Barbells made from raw steel are not plated and therefore marks from the machining process may be visible. Stainless steel shafts will show CNC processing marks. These are cosmetic and will not impact the barbell's performance.

Key Features of the Stainless 28MM Training Bar:

The Look & Feel of Stainless Steel
1

The Look & Feel of Stainless Steel

With no plating, the knurl on the Stainless Steel Ohio Bar is left exactly how we machined it, providing a great feel that cannot be achieved with other finishes. It’s similar to the knurl feel from a bare steel shaft, but with better corrosion resistance. The stainless steel we use owes its heritage to the Rogue Elephant Bar. It was chosen because it is especially resistant to becoming bent with use.  Please Note: Rogue recommends using a synthetic bristle brush, NOT a steel brush, to clean a stainless steel shaft. Steel on steel can cause rusting over time. See more tips here: Bar Care & Maintenance.

Proprietary Matte Black Sleeve Finish
2

Proprietary Matte Black Sleeve Finish

Rogue’s new PMB finish utilizes a process that effectively transforms the surface of the steel rather than coating it, greatly increasing the sleeves’ long-term corrosion resistance and color endurance. Please Note: The Proprietary Matte Black metal treatment process also hardens the steel, which can cause some additional friction with plates that have a chamfer.

F SCALE™

The F Scale™ is a durability scale for barbells based on functional testing at stresses similar to what barbells experience when being dropped from overhead. Bars that have been treated with Rogue Work Hardening (RWH™) are designated by having an R in their F Rating™. For more information on F Scale™ click here.

OXIDATION RATE

The resistance of a barbell to oxidation depends on the type of steel and the coating. Barbells at the lower end of the spectrum will require more care and maintenance to preserve their appearance than barbells at the upper end of the spectrum.

Absolutely hate this bar
I've had this bar for 2 years and don't like it at all and barely use it. I purchased it on Matte Black Friday thinking it was a good deal especially since it was supposed to be extra corrosion resistant (I live near the coast). At first touch you can tell the bar is excellent quality... then you put weights on it and immediately regret your purchase decision. The tolerance and/or friction on this bar's sleeves is awful. You are fighting with the bar to load plates onto it. There's so much friction that every time you load and unload the bar, you get a ton of metal shavings in the grooves of the sleeves from the weight plates. When you hold the sleeves to get leverage to pull the plates off, your hands are coated in shavings. Don't touch your eyes. Rogue's response to this problem is that this can be wiped off... This black sleeve could be a decent option on a powerlifting bar for benching or squatting for working up sets because you don't need collars on this to prevent weights from sliding off. For a weightlifting/deadlifting bar, this is a horrible feature. I'd happily send this bar back if Rogue would let me. Getting replacement sleeves that are not the black steel finish would have also been an acceptable remedy. Since they have the disclaimer that "The Proprietary Matte Black metal treatment process also hardens the steel, which can cause some additional friction with plates that have a chamfer.", that means it's my fault I didn't understand the bar sucks to use. Rogue has a lot of excuses for this bar. I've purchased a lot from Rogue over the years and this is the only purchase I've ever regretted. Please don't waste your money with this bar like I did. This bar with literally any other sleeve would be an excellent purchase.

Feels good, but bends easily.
I've had this bar for about 6ish months, maybe just over. It feels good in your hands and was one of my favorites, but over time it's started to bend. I don't often go above 315 right now, so it's disappointing that it bent with such light weight over such a short period of time. It's probably fine if you're a beginner, but for anyone going heavier, this might now be the bar for you.

Thank you for raising this to our attention. We have reached out via email to learn more about what you are experiencing, and resolve any potential issues with your bar. However, if this bend is happening while the bar is loaded, this is to be expected. The Training Bar is meant to have great whip.

Great value Oly bar but not the best spin
I have had this bar for about 3 months now. Completed a weightlifting cycle with it. Great bar. Knurling is outstanding. Have yet to use chalk with it. Great whip and flex. For the money hard to beat. It’s a bushing bar so if you want more spin upgrade to the bearing bars. Spin on this bar is simply “good enough” in my opinion. spins about as well as a Rogue bar 2.0 I have. Arguably slightly worse after I cleaned and oiled the Rogue Bar, which seems a little odd to me. Still, this is 5 stars as it’s great value for what you get

The Price was Right
I bought this bar since it's price was right, and due to not being able to due a hook grip with the 28.5 mm bar I purchased previously (I had no idea bars came in differing sizes). Since purchasing this bar and using it nearly 7 days a week, I've PR'd several lifts being able to hook grip on this bar. Speaking of grip, this is one grippy bar, the knurl is knarly, for sure. It took some getting used to but am this bar for all my Olympic lifts in CrossFit.

I love this bar!
I purchased this bar to replace my rusting American Barbell cerakote bar. The stainless feels amazing and has shown zero signs of rust.

Great bar!! Multiple blemishes.
Been buying rogue bars for years. Blemished and non blemished. When I received this bar it had so many blemishes on the shaft. None of my other bars even the blemished versions had anything like this bar. It’s a great bar with good knurl and does what it’s suppose to but the blemishes are all over. I know stainless steel is suppose to have a couple I guess but this seemed like a really blemished bar.

Best Value
I own this as well as an Ohio ECoat. For Crossfit and Oly Lifting, I much prefer this bar. Super grippy knurl even though they are both classified as "standard". Really don't need chalk with this. Whip is great as well and you can really feel a difference when the weights get up there. Now I can use my Ohio bar for rack movements and really extend the life of both. Did get this during Matte Black November sales so the value was crazy.
